Mr. Iid is currently a Senior Advisor for the African Union Commission (AUC) focusing on resource mobilization and partnerships for food security in the Horn of Africa. Mr.Iid also Collaborates with the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) to policy guidance, and engage stakeholders to address the food security challenges in the IGAD region. as part of advisory role, I collaborate with government agencies, international organizations, and private sector partners to create and execute strategies to improve agricultural productivity, resilience, and sustainability.

Mr. Iid previously served as the Senior Advisor for the African Agricultural Transformation Initiative (AATI). The AATI focuses on enhancing sustainable development in Africa by connecting strategic agricultural initiatives with effective execution at the grassroots level. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving AGRA, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), the UN's International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and McKinsey & Company, hosted by IFAD. During the tenure of Mr.Iid focused on developing partnerships and securing resources for the organization, with a particular emphasis on the Middle East and non-traditional donors.
Prior to that, Mr.Iid also served as the Special Envoy for the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) in Africa, a technical arm of the Organization for Islamic Conference (OIC) offering expertise on sustainable agriculture, rural development, food security, and biotechnology to member states. while Mr.Iid was the Special Envoy effectively expedited the signing of the IOFS Statute by new member states such as Gabon and Rwanda, who have requested observer status.

Mr. Iid was a senior politician who served in the government for over 8 years as a long-serving Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation for the federal government of Somalia for close to decade.

Mr.Iid Previously served as Minister of Livestock .During which participated in various FAO, IFAD, DLCOEA, ECSAD, AOAD committees and governing body sub-committees representing Somalia. Addressed numerous international forums advocating for increased investment in agriculture to facilitate rapid growth and transformation across the continent. During this time in office, Iid effectively mobilized funds and resources from donors and development partners including the ongoing 150 Million Food System Resilience Program -FSRP of the World Bank.

This bolstered the country's resilience efforts and enhanced the adoption of new technologies in the agriculture sector. Mr.Iid was recognized for leading the campaign to control operations against one of the worst Desert Locust infestations. This effort aimed to prevent devastating consequences for affected communities. The campaign received technical support from the FAO Somalia Desert Locust Crises Response Project and secured $58 million from Somalia's development partners including the World Bank, USAID, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the UK.

Mr.Iid track record of competency and expertise in leadership and management stands out. Iid holds an MBA degree and is currently completing a PhD in Agricultural Economics Leadership, demonstrating exceptional skills in leadership, coordination, and collaboration. Iid posses vast experience and extensive network developed over time in the UN, EU, AU, and sub-regional RECs, as well as with other partners such as civil society, multilateral banks, and the private sector, is significant. Iid experience spans academia, the public sector, and the private sector, crossing various countries at different stages of development.

These milestones highlight some of my contributions to the sector. My main focus was on boosting agricultural productivity, enhancing trade, and building resilience against challenges such as climate change and pest invasions.

  • Effective response to desert locust invasions led Combat and control operations with coordinated efforts with international partners like FAO, DLCO, resulting in minimized crop damage and enhanced resilience against future outbreaks. This invasion was worst in 70 years in Horn of Africa.
  • Established first institution for plant inspectorate, Somali Agricultural and Inspection Services (SARIS), First Plant Health Inspectorate Services agency.
  • Advocated for debt relief and lifting suspension of IFAD operations.
  • Revitalization of Agricultural Production: Increased agricultural productivity through modern farming techniques and improved seed distribution, benefiting smallholder farmers.
  • It was during my tenure when maximum number of successful implementations of irrigation projects were implemented in Shabelle and Juba Rivers to mitigate the impact of erratic rainfall patterns, improving water management for crops.
  • Policy Reforms and Institutional Strengthening: Introduction of policies promoting sustainable agriculture, including soil conservation, climate-smart farming practices, and diversification of crops to enhance food security.
  • Debt Relief and Partnership Building: Successful negotiations leading to debt relief, which allowed resumption of funding from international partners, including IFAD, thus facilitating large-scale agricultural projects.
  • Strengthened collaboration with key development partners, such as African Union, IFAD, FAO, WB, and African Development Bank, and other international organizations, to scale agricultural initiatives and attract investment.
  • Support for women and youth in agriculture, promoting inclusivity and development of agribusiness ventures to stimulate economic growth. For this, I have appointed maximum number of professional females within Ministry.

During my tenure as Minister of Livestock, these are some of the milestones that reflect a comprehensive approach to reviving and strengthening the livestock sector in Somalia after the devastating famine in 2016. My focus was on export, sustainability, health, and regulatory frameworks.

  • Achieved a record-breaking 5.5 million heads of livestock export to overseas markets, thus livestock contributing hard currency. see this report of FAO https://www.fao.org/somalia/news/detail-events/en/c/410266/
  • Successfully negotiated lifting of international bans, particularly to Gulf countries, leading to record-breaking livestock exports. This revitalized Somalia's economy, which heavily depends on livestock, around 40% to Somalia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
  • Launched initiatives to improve animal health services, ensuring regular vaccination and disease surveillance programs to control endemic and transboundary animal diseases.
  • Developing Livestock Policy 2015-2020, which is incorporated in NDP 017-2019.
  • Established veterinary training institutions and clinics to build capacity for local veterinarians, enhancing quality of animal health services across country.
  • Implemented robust animal health inspection services to certify livestock for export, boosting confidence among international buyers.
  • Drought-Resilient Livestock Projects. Developing programs aimed at promoting drought-resilient livestock breeds and enhancing water access for pastoralists, addressing challenges posed by climate change.
  • Introduced training for pastoral communities on sustainable livestock practices and animal husbandry, improving productivity and resilience to environmental stressors.
  • Led drafting and implementation of National Livestock Policy to address key challenges in the sector, including disease control, export standards, and sustainable grazing.
  • Strengthened regulations around livestock markets, ensuring fair pricing and better hygiene standards for Somalia Livestock Quarantine in main exporting gateways of Berbera, Bosaso, and Mogadishu.
