Achievements

  • Provided supervised legal advice to members of the public in the areas of family law, housing, and wills & probate.
  • Conducted client interviews, performed legal research and drafted advice letters.

Law Reform Project (October 2023 - April 2024)

Responsibilities

  • Identified areas of law in need of reform together with Clinic members and the local community.
  • Provided support to academics on their law reform work.

Housing and Homelessness Project (November 2022 - September 2023)

Worked with Beacon House, a local charity in Colchester, that helps homeless people and those at high risk of homelessness, providing free legal advice on a range of areas of the law; mainly housing and family.

Responsibilities.

  • Spoke to guests at BH, identifying legal issues and taking referrals.
  • Wrote session attendance notes after sessions and/or advice sessions at BH highlighting the main events of the session, detailing the facts of the case, advice given and follow-up needed if any.

Legal, Complaints, Investigation and Redress Department

Achievements

  • Reviewed legislative bills for compliance with equality and non-discrimination principles and contributed to drafting proposed amendments.
  • Appeared before a parliamentary committee to present the Commission’s input and proposed changes on Equalisation Fund Administration Bill .
  • Attended a stakeholder breakfast meeting on the development of public participation legislation, where I presented the Commission’s preliminary comments and contributed to stakeholder discussions.
  • Participated in a five-day workshop on the development of Kenya’s National Action Plan on Inequality, where I developed and presented a proposed roadmap for the formulation of the plan, gaining insight into national policy formulation.
  • Attended the Employment and Labour Relations Court Symposium (ELRASE II) alongside other members of the Commission, gaining insights into current issues in labour law, employment rights, and judicial approaches to equality in the workplace.
  • Supported the Commission’s legal and investigative work on complaints related to gender-based discrimination and human rights violation by conducting legal research, drafting legal opinions and reports.
