Sustainability Specialist
I incorporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into tobacco growing. I work directly with farmers, suppliers, and internal teams to promote responsible agriculture, climate resilience, and community development, while ensuring compliance with global sustainability standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Zero child labor Advocacy:
Implement and monitor strict policies to eliminate child labor and prevention measures across the leaf supply chain through conducting regular field visits, awareness campaigns, and community engagement programs.
- Crop diversification:
Implement a vegetable project, providing over 500 farmers with vegetable seeds, enhancing food security in their households, and supplementing income streams.
- Women's Development Program:
Led initiatives to empower female farmers and male farmer spouses through training on women empowerment, financial literacy, best agricultural practices, and income-generating activities.
Led the Mushroom project: 20 female farmers were trained, enabling them to generate additional income, diversify their livelihoods, and enhance economic empowerment.
- Farmer livelihood improvement:
I support 800+ farmers through capacity-building programs, promoting sustainable practices, and access to agricultural inputs, which has resulted in increased crop yields and improved quality.
- WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene)
Lead initiatives aimed at improving access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education for our farmers and the community at large.
Led a borehole project providing clean water to a local dispensary, benefiting more than 3,000 patients and community members, and improving access to safe water and sanitation.
- Monitoring and compliance:
Ensure compliance with global sustainability frameworks such as THRIVE and STP, supporting external audits through accurate field data, reporting, and impact tracking.
- Stakeholder Engagement:
Collaboration with internal departments, local government bodies, and community groups to align sustainability objectives with field realities, and strengthen partnerships.
- Sustainable Agriculture:
Promote soil conservation, integrated pest management, afforestation, and climate-smart farming practices.
- Afforestation/Environmental programs.
Led the Adapt a Forest program in Mt. Elgon, planting 900,000 tree seedlings to restore degraded land. Managed afforestation in BROA sites, planting 15,000 trees to.
Support biodiversity and environmental sustainability.
Promote farmer-led reforestation, providing annual tree seedlings to farmers, ensuring a sustainable woodfuel supply and long-term environmental stewardship.
