Work History

Intern

Seacom Communication Solutions
06.2025 - 08.2025

During my industrial attachment at SEACOM CLS in Mombasa, I gained practical experience in submarine cable operations, data center connectivity, and ISP core network systems. I worked with engineers on both routine operations and field activities, strengthening my technical and teamwork skills.

  • Performed daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance checks in the AVR, MSB, Collocation, and Backhaul rooms — recording environmental readings, UPS parameters, generator runtime, and monitoring HVAC systems.
  • Assisted in preventive and corrective maintenance to ensure continuous operation of submarine and terrestrial network systems.
  • Worked with DWDM systems, ODFs, routers, switches, inverters, and rectifiers, gaining hands-on telecom and power management experience.
  • Carried out fiber patching, running and labeling patch cords between ODFs, routers, and switches, ensuring proper connectivity and documentation.
  • Supported new equipment installations and upgrades, including Akamai CDN setup, assisting in racking, cabling, and post-installation testing.
  • Used OTDR, OLS, OPM, and a 100G tester for fiber link testing and troubleshooting, checking optical power levels, losses, and link performance.
  • Participated in field work at Icolo MBA1 and MBA2 data centers, assisting in fiber tracing, equipment verification, and documentation of SEACOM’s interconnections.
  • Helped engineers with site research, technical reporting, and equipment evaluations during maintenance planning.
  • Guided visiting engineering students during educational tours, explaining SEACOM’s submarine cable and backbone operations.
  • Worked with the Network Operations Center (NOC) to observe fault monitoring, incident response, and escalation procedures.
  • Volunteered for night shift operations when extra manpower was needed, showing reliability and teamwork.
  • Completed a Core ISP Network Simulation Project in GNS3, configuring MPLS, IS-IS, and iBGP, assigning IP schemes, and simulating inter-ISP routing.

Key Skills Gained: DWDM operations, fiber diagnostics, network troubleshooting, routing protocols, ISP design, and telecom system maintenance.
