Dr. Ametaj earned his Ph.D. in Nutritional Immunology from Iowa State University and completed postdoctoral training at Iowa State University, Purdue University, and Cornell University. He joined the University of Alberta in 2004. Specializing in nutritional immunology, Dr. Ametaj focuses on understanding the interplay between nutrition and immune responses and their role in the onset of production diseases in ruminants, alongside devising innovative approaches to reduce the prevalence of transition diseases in dairy cattle. His research encompasses several key areas: 1) exploring the etiology and pathogenesis of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies; 2) analyzing the metabolome of dairy cattle across four major fluids: milk, plasma, urine, and rumen fluid; 3) developing vaccines to prevent diseases in transition cows; 4) investigating the use of probiotics to avert uterine infections and enhance reproductive and productive performance in dairy cows; 5) examining health impacts on cows transitioning from conventional to organic management systems; and 6) innovating cereal grain processing technologies to boost health and productivity in ruminants.
