Production Underwriter - Financial Lines

Role Summary:

  • Responsible for achieving the department's renewal and new business budgets, whilst maintaining strict adherence to underwriting authority and underwriting guidelines issued.
  • Review of renewal and new business submissions, loss runs, conduct research and underwriting assessment to determine degree of risk for each account and appropriate risk premium to charge.
  • For risk that fall out of the country's underwriting authority, prepare referral notes, detailing the risk profiles and acceptance analysis for approval by the referral underwriters.
  • Develop existing and grow new broker contacts through regular visitation, business development initiatives, and broker training.
  • Work alongside the underwriting manager to coordinate the operational, strategic and people functions of the department.

Achievements:

  • In 2023, surpassed our budget by 32%, a result of my proactive portfolio management and producer training activities.
  • Successfully steered the department through a difficult portfolio remediation exercise (2022 & 2023).
  • Together with the Business Development department head, Designed a 6 month accelerator course for brokers, with technical insights on underwriting and sales process for Management Liability and Cyber Insurance. We recently graduated our pilot cohort.
  • For Cyber Liability, Management Liability and Professional Liability, Studied insurance industry changes, remaining up-to-date with latest trends and protocols.

Head of Broker Engagement

Role Summary:

  • Recruiting, retaining and expanding business relationships with identified Broker Partners (insurance & reinsurance)
  • Act as the company's broker relationship manager to ensure high success rates for acquiring new business and retaining active portfolio.
  • Development and implementation of sales plans for the department.

Achievement:

  • Cultivated and maintained relationships with key accounts, contributing to a 95% retention ratio in 2021 and 2022.
  • Developed and executed a marketing strategy, identifying potential growth areas leading to a 28% increase in new business year on year.
  • Forged active coinsurance relationship with 2 peer underwriters, allowing us to secure 13 reciprocal businesses, ultimately increasing the company's revenue.
  • Designed a training programme and schedule for our supporting brokers. This allowed us to achieve a sustainable mindshare as the commercial underwriter of choice amongst our producers.

Role Summary:

  • Implementation of the company’s sales strategy and achievement of the sectional budget. Responsible for developing and maintaining commercially productive relationships with both new and old clients (direct clients and brokers). Scope in includes: new business acquisition, retention, tender follow up and submissions, service management, credit control, intermediary training and company marketing.
  • In an additional role, chair of the company’s Innovation committee with the task of driving the incremental innovation strategy of the company. I was also an Organizational Performance Index Champion (OPI) running with the Leadership and Management focus.

Achievements:

  • Consistently overshot my targets for the period 2015 to 2020 through deepened ties with allocated intermediaries and relationship-building strategies such as, periodical product trainings, efficient servicing and customer focused insurance product reviews
  • My average retention rate and business pipeline hit ratio stands at 89% and 23% respectively
  • Developed and initiated engagements with Vivo Energy Kenya (Shell) on the implementation of a mass-market product distribution solution for Home Insurance. I also spearheaded new product innovations for the business i.e Pet & bloodstock insurance
  • We won the 2018 Think Business Awards for Most Innovative Insurance Company. Partly, we attribute this accolade to the innovation committee’s engagements and activities in product, process and policy innovations.

1. Contact Center Quality Assurance officer July 2013 – Dec 2013 Responsible for assessing agent performance/behavior and coach and counsel agents to modify their performance/behavior to facilitate a high level of customer service and telephone sales skills.

2. Contact Center Agent March 2012 – July 2013

Make or take telephone calls on behalf of the company in order to fulfil customer requirements. This involved selling insurance, providing customer service, and undertaking customer research. Dealt with email enquiries and the bulk SMS platform as well.


Achievements:

Assisted in the development of a telesales curriculum for the call center agents with the intention of transforming the center from a cost center to a revenue generation center.

Identified development opportunities for the agents and provided ongoing training and coaching on an as needed basis.
