PERSONAL STATEMENT:
· I am a passionate and committed surgeon with over fifteen years in clinical practice, but with a keen interest to advance the knowledge in surgical management of thoracic conditions to serve humanity.
· My interest for a short observer Course and possible advanced Fellowship Training is to acquire knowledge and skills in this discipline that will enable me provide quality surgical care to patients with these conditions who continue to suffer due to limited training opportunities and expertise in this field in our country.
· I developed interest in surgical management of thoracic conditions early in my career while working closely and assisting a Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon in performing these Procedures in our County Referral Hospital. after which I registered to be a Member of ISDE.
Clinical Duties:
· Reviewing of surgical emergency patients in the Accident and
Emergency Department.
· Carrying out emergency surgical procedures.
· Performing open elective surgical procedures including oesophageal
and gastric cancer surgery among other oncological surgeries.
· Conducting surgical outpatient clinics for preoperative review of
elective patients and post operative follow up.
· Undertaking teaching ward rounds in the in-patient department.
· Coordinating monthly surgical morbidity and mortality audits.
Training:
· Participating in training of eight surgical residents under the College
of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) training
program.
· Supervising Medical Officer Interns in the surgical department
(10 annually).
· Mentoring Clinical Officer Interns with transfer of surgical skills.
(15 annually)
· Overseeing Continuous Medical Education of physician and
non-physician health care workers in the hospital on surgical
diagnoses.
Leadership:
· Contributing to seamless functioning of the operating theatres by
chairing the theatre users committee (40+ staff).
· Taking part in the activities of the Infection Prevention Committee.
· Facilitating implementation of disaster preparedness in the County by spearheading the activities of the hospital emergency response committee.
· Collaborating with other hospital departments in strategic planning, budgeting, and procurement as part of the Hospital Management Team.
Achievements:
· Implementation of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Protocols in the surgical department.
· Accomplished efficient management surgical patients in the inpatient wards, leading to a decrease in length of hospital stay by 50%.
· Achieved a reduction in waiting time for elective procedures by 75%.
· Introduced Standard Operating Procedures for investigation of surgical conditions.
· In conjunction with procurement unit facilitated acquisition of new medical equipment.
· Participating in surgical procedures in different specialties such as cardiothoracic, orthopedic, pediatric, plastic, neurosurgery, urology after which I focused on general surgery.
· Preparing patients for surgery for both minor and major operations and performing or assisting in the surgeries.
· Conducting daily ward rounds and major ward rounds with the consultants in charge.
· Responding to inquiries relating to the progress of surgical patients in the various wards.
· Contributing to the training of Medical Officer Interns and undergraduate students.
Clinical Duties:
· Performing minor thoracic surgical procedures under supervision, such as decortications, open lung biopsies.
· Participating in open thoracic oncological surgeries, management of oesophageal, lung and gastric cancer patients alongside the thoracic surgeon.
· Handling the post operative care of patients in the Intensive Care Unit and surgical wards.
· Assisting in the follow up and review of patients in the surgical outpatient clinic.
· Attending to surgical emergencies in the hospital.
Training:
· Teaching non-physician health care workers at the Kenya Medical Training College Nyeri Campus.
Research:
· Recruiting patients for a country wide breast cancer study conducted by the Aga Khan University Hospital.
Performing breast cancer surgeries under supervision
On -Job Training by Hospital Consultants on Completion of University Medical Training.

· Carried out surgeries in smaller camps organized in Nyeri County in 2018 and 2019 focusing on hernias and thyroid conditions.
· As a medical Officer, volunteered in annual Operation Smile Missions 2009 -2011.
