The project focused on food security and climate change adaptation in East Africa, particularly in Kenya and Tanzania. The primary objective of the program was to enhance the livelihoods and nutritional status of the rural and urban poor. The specific objective of my sub-project was to provide knowledge and information on the current soil fertility status in the key AIV production areas, the productivity of AIV species, and species-specific organic C fluxes in the smallholder AIV production systems in Kenya. The study entailed both experimental and survey research approaches. I tackled the soil-related issues affecting the production of selected African Indigenous Vegetables (AIV) species, plant residue carbon input, C mineralization, and humus carbon production.
