Resident in Anatomic Pathology

Histopathology:

  • Sign out of 300- 350 surgical pathology cases a month as a senior resident using an electronic health records system
  • Examination and interpretation of immunohistochemistry slides stained both manually and using automated systems
  • Examination of special stains and rendering of diagnoses including but not limited to Methenamine silver, Masson trichrome, Reticulin, PAS, Grocott, Giemsa and Ziehl Nelsen stains
  • Review of an average of 10 second opinion histopathology cases a week
  • Gross examination and sampling of simple to complex surgical pathology specimens
  • Performance of relook gross specimens as required
  • Weekly attendance and presentations at multidisciplinary meetings with a special focus on breast, genitourinary and general pathology

Cytopathology:

  • Sign out of an average of 15 gynecological smears daily
  • Sign out of a median of 30 cases a week for non- gynecological cytology smears
  • Participate in as well as attend the weekly teaching of junior colleagues on specimen collection, processing and interpretation of cytopathology cases

Forensic pathology:

  • Provision of timely and team- oriented autopsy services as well as histopathological evaluation of collected samples as needed

Other roles :

  • Completed a dissertation on breast pathology titled: 'ARID1A and CD14 expression in triple negative and estrogen receptor positive breast cancer among Kenyan women- a validation study.' Efforts at publication of this manuscript are underway
  • Participation in weekly teaching through morphology sessions, departmental teaching and case presentations and mentorship of incoming junior colleagues
  • Resident team monthly roster scheduling in my second year of training
