Over the years, he has contributed significantly to shaping national nutrition strategies, working closely with government bodies, development partners, and healthcare institutions. His work has been instrumental in integrating nutrition into broader public health frameworks, ensuring that it remains central to discussions on disease prevention, food security, and sustainable development.
As President of KNDI, Dr. Omondi provides strategic direction to the Institute, overseeing its mandate to regulate and professionalize Kenya's nutrition and dietetics sector. Under his stewardship, KNDI has strengthened its regulatory systems, enhanced professional standards, and expanded its national and regional influence. His leadership has also reinforced collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Kenya and global partners, aligning Kenya's nutrition agenda with international best practices and development goals.
A strong advocate for capacity building, Dr. Omondi has prioritized developing a highly skilled nutrition workforce. He has championed initiatives that promote continuous professional development, research, and innovation, ensuring that practitioners remain equipped to address emerging health challenges. His efforts have helped raise the profile and credibility of nutritionists and dieticians, positioning them as key actors within the healthcare delivery system.
Beyond institutional leadership, Dr. Omondi is recognized for his role in advancing community health and nutrition awareness. He has supported programs aimed at combating malnutrition, improving maternal and child health, and addressing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases. Through his advocacy, he continues to emphasize the importance of preventive healthcare, healthy lifestyles, and informed dietary choices as critical drivers of national development.

In addition to his presidential role, Dr. Omondi currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of KNDI, where he plays a hands-on role in regulating the training, practice, and research of nutritionists and dieticians across Kenya. He has been instrumental in establishing and strengthening robust regulatory frameworks governing nutrition and dietetics training institutions nationwide. Notably, his leadership has extended to post-graduation mentorship, where he has guided over 10,000 professionals, equipping them with practical competencies essential for effective service delivery in the sector.
Dr. Omondi's academic leadership is equally distinguished. He previously served as the Head of the Department of Nutrition and Health at Maseno University, where he led departmental programming and helped shape the next generation of nutrition experts. His academic influence is complemented by his work as a long-term monitoring and evaluation consultant, supporting complex programmes that address both nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions across diverse populations.
With over 15 years of experience in public health and nutrition research, Dr. Omondi has built an impressive scholarly portfolio, authoring more than 50 peer-reviewed publications since 2007. His commitment to knowledge dissemination is further demonstrated through his role as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics, Nairobi, a reputable platform indexed by African Journals Online (AJOL). Through the journal and its associated annual scientific conferences, he continues to foster knowledge exchange and elevate discourse on critical nutrition issues affecting Africa.
Dr. Omondi has also played key roles in national and regional policy and advisory structures. He has been part of the Secretariat for the Inter-Sectoral Committee on Health Workforce Education and Training Reforms under the Health Act 2017, spearheaded by the Ministry of Health. Additionally, he has contributed to the Infant and Young Child Committee under the Breast Milk Substitutes (Regulation and Control) Act, 2012, demonstrating his active involvement in shaping policies that protect and promote public health.
Further reinforcing his legacy of innovation, Dr. Omondi has spearheaded the implementation of the KNDI Resource Mobilization Hub, known as the KNDI ATRI Programmes, with a focus on research, innovation, capacity building, business incubation, and community partnerships. He is currently leading efforts to strengthen clinical skills laboratories across universities and colleges in Kenya, promoting competency-based training through a sustainable business incubation model. His research collaborations extend across Africa, including partnerships with universities and regional consortia, as well as consultancy work with the East, Central, and Southern Africa Health Community on model nutrition curricula in countries such as Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.
