As a Senior House Officer in the Pediatrics Department at Aga Khan University Hospital, I was actively involved in delivering comprehensive care to neonates, infants, children, and adolescents in both inpatient and outpatient settings, under the supervision of consultant pediatricians. My responsibilities included the admission, stabilization, and management of acutely ill children, particularly in high-acuity areas such as the Pediatric Accident & Emergency Unit, High Dependency Unit (HDU), and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
I conducted daily ward rounds—both independently and alongside consultants—where I performed thorough clinical assessments, formulated differential diagnoses, and developed evidence-based management plans. I also played a key role in monitoring child growth and development, offering nutritional counseling, and addressing routine vaccination and preventive health needs in general pediatric and well-baby clinics.
Working closely within a multidisciplinary team that included pediatric nurses, nutritionists, physiotherapists, and social workers, I contributed to a holistic approach to patient care. In addition to my clinical duties, I participated in academic activities such as teaching sessions, journal clubs, case discussions, and morbidity and mortality reviews, which enriched the department’s learning environment.
I was actively involved in mentoring and supervising medical students and interns during their pediatric rotations, guiding them through clinical assessments and procedures. Furthermore, I ensured that all patient documentation, including notes, discharge summaries, and handovers, was completed accurately and on time. My role also extended to participation in pediatric quality improvement initiatives and clinical audits aimed at enhancing patient safety and outcomes within the department.
