Project Assistant – Land for Life Project

Volunteer for SMART/Smart Mobile Data Collection Tool App

  • Collect data and generate reports from various conservancies in Mara that uses Smart Mobile Data Collection Tool App
  • Train Rangers on SMART and how to collect data using the App
  • Support in trouble shooting the App whenever it malfunctions not to lose the data collected
  • Compile and send monthly data reports to Project Officer
  • Participate in the monitoring of the collared Elephants within Mara Ecosystem on quarterly basis using the VHF and the APP for tracking them
  • Creation of Maps using the GIS for different Conservancies that uses the Smart mobile data tool so that to plot images of animals sighted during the patrol for easy interpretation of the data report
  • Assist in coordinating outreach programs for schools and communities around Mara i.e
  • Trans-Mara, Siana and Loita to show case films on environmental and how to take care of habitat.

Internship

Save The Elephants /Elephants & Bees Tsavo East –Sagalla Office

  • Organised and facilitated meeting with communities of Mwakoma and Mwambiti villages on how to maintain their Beehive fence
  • Organize and implement Environmental Education programs, for examples organised educational film show at Kileva East Field Primary school and other schools around Voi
  • Participate in the monitoring the adoption of Beehive fence as an elephant deterrent measure
  • Computation of data on human elephant conflict, honey harvesting, rainfall, footprint and beehive fence
  • Set up the Beehive fence on farmer’s farm, with the Mobile Unit crew then give a presentation on how the Beehive fence works on deterring elephants not to crop raid.

Research Assistant

  • Camera trapping –I set up 40 cameras along elephant pathways
  • This was part of an effort to understand the elephant pathway, the elephant group types using the pathways and human-elephant conflict
  • Sign surveys –I carried out elephant sign surveys with a team of scouts to understand seasonal use of pathways
  • Here I counted dung and elephant signs along set transects
  • Data collection, entry & verification – I entered all the conflict data, sign survey data and other questionnaire data on Excel from what I collected from the field
  • Engagement with the community & schools – I carried out several meetings with the community to sensitize them on the importance of having wildlife
  • I informed them that they should learn to live with wildlife in harmony and in case of any incidents of human wildlife conflict, they should report in order to obtain assistance from KWS.
